Alex's Lemonade Stand
Saturday 9th June 2007.
Request:
My name is Ann, and you were kind enough to help me 2 years ago with a release for the children and families of Mary's Place in windsor, Ct.
I am very involved in Alexslemonade which is a foundation for cancer research for children . It was begun five years ago by Alex Scott who had just finished her first stem cell transplant. She did not want a lemonade stand for the usual reasons of fun and money she wanted her stand for raising money for "her" hospital Ct. Children's Medical center and so all children's tumors could get better. we have 8 grown children and Alex's mom Liz Flynn Scott is one of 9 . We were next door neighbors for 26 years hence I know the family well and know Alexslemonade well.
Alex died on August 1, 2005 but not before raising million dollars for all children's cancer research. Her grandmother Scott is part Indian and had ordered butterflies for release at her funeral. At least 90% or more of funds raised for Cancer research for this foundation go directly to cancer research grants and cutting edge treatments. The Scott's did not know whether the foundation would proceed after Alex's death as they thought people might forget. Not so they have received thousands of letter encouraging them to continue and this year alone have raised 5 million for research. Alex's website is Alexslemonade.org should you be interested in learning more about this courageous child who did so much in her short lifetime for cancer research.
Children's cancers are the least funded of all cancers. At any rate I do a stand on the Windsor Green on Alexs national lemonade stand weekend which is always the second weekend in June This year 9th. I have sent a not on a Wings of Hope and now you too. My hope is that I might be able to get 5 dozen butterflies for this event and if there is any chance I can get a break in pricing as I do not have a fund . I hope that I will have donations to help me with some of the funding. My thought is to do this as a fund raisers and if I can get some for a reduced price and am lucky enough to get some free I world be able sell before hand and do our release for Alex and those that buy a butterfly for release. Thank you for any insight and help you can give me
Ann W.
Donations:
Melanie McCarthy of The Monarchy Butterfly Farm donated butterflies for this release.
Reports:
I just want to thank you for all your efforts and for additional butterflies. sorry to have not gotten to meet you as I feel your are someone special. Several butterflies have already been released and those that released them were in awe. they had never done this type of thing nor had they ever seen the lovey packaging and beautiful stories you gave me. We will read them both tomorrow before we release them. Don't know why I am so pasionate about this for this particular year but my mind and heart have said this all winter. Thank you for making this happen. i feel many must need this feeling of a release. Thanks again. Ann.
ABOUT ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND
In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.
For the next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 -- she had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime.
Alex's spirited determination to raise awareness and money for all childhood cancer while she bravely fought her own deadly battle with cancer has inspired thousands of people, from all walks of life to raise money and give to her cause. Alex's family and supporters are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501c3 charity. As of January 2007, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $10 million for childhood cancer research. The result -- Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has given millions of dollars for childhood cancer research across the country!
